This is the first time going to Wales and to the sea side as well. The event is
planned for the bank holiday weekend 23th & 26th of May so it should have good
weather. This place is close to Bryn, TheDruid's, home so he knows the area well
and can provide some logistics support with local tyres on the ground.
Bryn : I will have a car available on site for any shopping runs required, and
am willing to get all the heavy stuff (Beer, BBQ foods & charcoal, etc.) in
advance to save time.
I also hope to have the trailer finished in the event of any rescues being
needed!
Anglesey is the BIG island off the north west coast of Wales joined by two
bridges to the mainland crossing the Menai Strait, Three quarters of the
inhabitants are Welsh speakers.
Bryn : Anglesey is a rural area with good riding roads, but be very aware of the
speed camera vans. There are NO fixed cameras on Anglesey, but the Talivans are
regularly seen on the local roads C watch your speed in 30 & 40 zones,
especially when there is no apparent good reason for the restriction C North
Wales Police Talivans love to ambush people leaving built up or restricted areas
just before you reach the National Speed Limit sign. Very little to do with
safety, lots to do with quotas & revenue......
The Centre is a place to explore the outdoor playground and mild climate of
Anglesey. The island has opportunities for adrenalin adventure and gentle
relaxation. If you dont want to ride there is sea kayaking, climbing,
windsurfing, beach activities, gentle walks and bird watching.
The Centre has self contained areas, each with their own self catering and
bathroom facilities. We have agreed to take one of them, Maris Annexe, Bedding
is provided Full catering is available and an on site bar/bistro The Paddlers
Return. There is a Cycle shed, gear store, ample parking, drying room and WiFi
available (cost not known, but not likely to be expensive if needed).
Bryn : If anyone urgently needs private Internet access, my house is only 3
miles away......
George plans to go down on Friday, Bryn will already be there so can check us
in, but since he lives nearby there should be no surprises. The local pubs are a
mile away but we expect most people will have to work and so will join us for a
beer at the site later.
Bryn : Recommended eateries near Holyhead C The Standing Stones next to
Morrissons supermarket, or The Valley Hotel in Valley village (3 miles from
Holyhead). Or if you are a penny pincher like me, Morrisons cafe..... I'm sorry
to say that really good Fish & Chip shops are few & far between, with the
Holyhead establishments being adequate/good at best C don't worry, I know where
the good ones are on our travels.....!
On Saturday we can find a destination to ride to, then BBQ, cook in the kitchen
(or go to a pub if it rains) in the evening. Same on Sunday maybe with a lunch,
then a gentle ride home on Monday, stopping for coffee and a break, feel free to
join in. You will be able to stay longer if you want to enjoy the area by
arranging it with the site.
Bryn : I have a local Coast Road rideout planned for Anglesey on the Saturday
(with planned photo-ops & stops), and a longer ride on Sunday into Snowdonia.
There are several routes to choose from, and I will take a vote based on what
sort of mileage the group wants to cover C or advise you if you want to go your
own seperate ways!
Plan:
Arrive Friday arrange your own food.
Ride out on Saturday and then a group evening meal.
Ride out on Sunday and then do our own thing for an evening meal.
Monday end with a gentle ride homeward, possibly with a group stop at Menai
Bridge for a photo-op, or a stop at Llandudno for lunch? To be discussed........
Bed spaces will be limited so pre-booking is essential. In the last 3 bunkhouse
events we have been able to accommodate couples in twin bedded rooms if they
booked early,
Organised by Bryn (with support from George) this is likely to be a quiet
weekend with gentle riding and catching up.
